2768 INUIT SEALSKINNING SCULPTURE. 1973. Greenstone sculpture. Signed Jimmy Smith. This bears the Canadian Eskimo Art "Igloo" sticker. A kneeling man flays a dead seal, on his knees. After a 1953 expedition by Canadian artist and educator James Houston, Inuit art of the Hudson Bay area became a protected and viable means of the native people to produce art for a fair profit. This comes from Povungnituk, a village along the Hudson Bay. Each region maintains its own style and subject matter and while the subject matter may be traditional (see lot 2770 for comparison) it is likely that it is entirely in keeping with the sculptural tenets passed from father to son in that region. Vestment produced in Italy or Spain currently in the form of a humeral veil (a long narrow vestment worn over the shoulder of a priest or prelate when carrying a monstrance or other sacred object such as a relic. The end panels are decorated with center figural rondels surrounded by Renaissance style griffins and cornucopea forms in gold on a red velvet ground. Each end panel and the long center panel are bordered by 2"W leaf and vine decoration in gold thread on red velvet groun with green and blue thread highlights. One end features a saint with a sword, possibly St. Paul. The other end features a saint with a book and key, possibly St. Peter. Size: 21"W, 104"L. Each end panel is 19"W, 21"W. 2909 CHINESE EXPORT FOO DOGS. 18th C. Chinese export ceramic foo dogs for the English market. Finely detailed left and right facing foo dogs on pierced plinth bases. Bases are decorated in green, pink and yellow floral and leaf designs. Foo dogs have green bodies with dot and line decoratoin, iron red raised decorative highlights, iron red lips and tongues, open mouth with detailed teeth. One dog has paw resting on animals, the other holds a giant reticulated pearl. Each dog is adorned with elaborate 18th C. style wigs descending down their backs.
