1173 DECORATIVE CASTLE PANEL OIL. Date unknown, probably 20th c. Unsigned. Oil on chamfered, finished wood. Painted as a tondo (round) image with vignetted foreground; a castle in an alpine setting are shown. Perhaps this was part of door's decoration. Size: 19 1/2" H., 17 1/4" w. 1174 DECORATIVE MILL PAINTING. Date unknown, probably 20th c. Oil on chamfered, finished wood. Unsigned. Painted as a tondo (round) image with a vignetted foreground; shows a mill or barn by a stream and a waterfall. Probably part of a door's panel decoration. Size: 19 1/4" h., 17 1/2" w. 1231 W. MORGAN OIL OF BOY AND FLUTE. Late 19th c. Oil on academy board. Signed lower left. This shows a rural boy playing a flute; similar to the subject matter and painting techniques of American genre work of the 19th c., particularly William Morgan (but this lot remains unsubstantiated). Size: 12" h., 9" w., framed 16" h., 13" w. Condition: no major defects (red paint lower right appears unintentional). 500 - 700
1234 MINIATURE: BOY IN SCOTTISH GARB. Dated on the back (typewritten) 1861. Paint on card. The card is marked on the back "Lazier, Syracuse, NY." Shows John Dows Hills, in a "costume brought fron Scotland by his parents. Size: 3 7/8" h., 2 3/8" w., framed 7" h., 5" w. Condition: verso acid burnt by cardboard backing; some craquellure. 200 - 400
1236 CHARLES SALIS KAELIN HARBOR SCENE. Early 20th c. Oil on hardboard. Signed CS Kaelin lower right. This scene shows a man rowing a boat into a harbor, closely packed with masted boats. This colorful rendering is done by the Ohio born Kaelin (Cincinnati-died 1929, Rockport, Mass.) whose subject matter after 1900 focussed on rugged New England scenery. This appears to be one among the ilk of such paintings. The color of the hardboard is used creatively to illustrate the masts (light brown). Size: 10" h., 8" w., framed 13" h., 11" w. 1237 KARL FIRTH GASPE COAST WATERCOLOR. 20th c. Watercolor on paper. Signed and titled lower right. Firth (Amer., 1911-) is a listed Detroit painter, cartoonist and watercolorist. His exhibition history includes shows at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Butler Institute of American Art. Firth's auction records include similar coastal scenes of the Canadian Northeast, but this image includes figures at work. Size: 15 1/4" h., 21 1/4" w., framed 26" h., 32" w. 1240 SIDERIS PINK AND YELLOW ROSES OIL. 20th c. On canvas. Signed Sideris lower right. There is a listed New York artist (died 1978) Alexander Sideris; a tag on the verso reads "pink and yellow roses painted for me by friend of Yo..(Yonkers?)." 1271 BLACK AMERICANA GENRE WATERCOLOR. Late 19th / early 20th c. On illustration board. Unsigned. Similar to the subject matter of such American illustrators as Harry Roseland, this shows an elderly man playing checkers with a waifish boy in a tattered room. 1272 H. LEWIS FOREST PASTEL. Late 19th / very early 20th c . Pastel on paper. Signed lower left. This lot shows a mountain lake bathed in yellow light and to the right of the lake is a forest. Many H. Lewises are listed artists and the identification remains in question, but the pastel is technically of high quality. Set in a period frame. 1273 MYRA BOYD FEMALE MINIATURE. Dated 1906. Paint on ivory or bone tondo. Signed Myra Boyd 1906 lower right edge. Myra Boyd (20th c, Chicago) is a listed painter of miniatures, and she was a pupil of Bougeureau among others. Size: 2 7/8" diameter. Condition: no visible defects; the frame is as is. 500 - 1,000
1312 MILES EARLY ITALIANATE OIL PAINTING. Dated '35 (1935). Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. Miles Early (American, 1886-?) is a listed artist who painted landscapes & Tuscan scenes. This shows Tuscan type buildings with tall Roman pines; the colors are warm greens, reds and ochres. Size: 23 1/2" h., 29" w., framed 29" h., 35 1/2" w. Condition: yellowed varnish and a little loose on its stretchers. 800 - 1,200

1404 ERNST HARTENFELD LANDSCAPE. Dated 1914. Oil on canvas. Signed and also indicated as "(after print)." This shows several buildings nestled among trees; the sky above is stormy. Overall colors are yellow and gray. Size: 33" h., 27 1/2" w. Condition: minor craquellure; no frame. 200 - 300

1452 GEORGES ROBIN MORNING LAKE OIL. 20th c. Oil on canvas. Signed Georges Robin, also stamped on the stretcher bars George Robin. Also marked in pen Matin sur La Levre (Morning on the Levre). Robin (French, 1904-1928) painted various French country and river scenes and is a listed artist. This shows a boater pushing away from a house upon a small lake. 1453 DOCKSIDE WATERCOLOR. 20th c. Watercolor on paper. Signed lower left "Sagravett." Accomplished wet on wet and wet on dry techniques give it its illusory appearance of three boats on water. Set in a massive gilded 19th c. frame. Size: 8 1/2" h., 13 1/2" w., framed 16 3/4" h., 21 1/2" w. Condition: no visible defects to the art, frame as is. 300 - 500
1455 WESTERN PA COLONIAL FORTS MAP. Dated 1882. Printed with red and blue coloring. From Mr Darlington's Fort Pitt. "A Map of Part of the Province of Pennsylvania West of the River Susquehanna." 1511 RENE CLARK LANDSCAPE AND ROAD. 20th c. Oil on canvas. Monogrammed RC. Clark (American, 1886-1969) is a listed illustrator who also produced easel paintings. He was known to have only signed his paintings with RC. This moody image (with deep & descriptive color) shows trees by a lake with a person walking along a road. Size: 23" h., 46" w., framed 27" h., 50" w. Condition: minor light craquellure. 800 - 1,000

1515 PAIR OF JOHN SHAW COPPER ENAMEL PICTURES. 20th c. Each is signed Shaw. One is a scene of people approaching a church in winter ("Winter Meeting"). 1594 BERTHA GILL JOHNSTON LANDSCAPE. Dated 1918. Oil on academy board. Signed lower left. This oil by the Pittsburgh artist (1870-?) active in Pittsburgh and Chautauqua, NY, shows a clump of trees overlooking a serene lake. Johnston studied with George Sotter and continued a Pennsylvania landscape tradition of close observation and meticulous technique. Size: 12" h., 18" w., framed 18" h., 24 1/2" w. Condition: no major defects. 700 - 1,000
1661 SULKOWSKI UN BELLA MASHERA. 1983. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. James Sulkowski is a Pittsburgh area painter whose images usually are of flowers or landscape; however among his commissioned works are paintings for the Metropolitan Opera, NYC. This scene is much like that for it shows a pink gowned woman and a masked man obviously as characters from an opera. Sulkowski's work appears in many private and public collections. Size: 30" h., 20" w., framed 36" h., 26" w. Condition: no visible defects; frame as is. 400 - 600
1669 AUTUMN COUNTRY SCENE. Dated '93. (1893). Oil on canvas, backed by a board. Signed Bliss lower right. Shows a man with a wooden pail walking along a path to his cabin. 1766 ATTR. TO GEORGE BELLOWS OIL. Early 20th c. Oil on canvas. Signed Geo. Bellows in the lower right. This vigorously painted image is of rocks being buffeted by a the ocean waves. Size: 20" h., 16" w. Condition: frame rabbet residue on the recto edges; stretched on aged Fredrix stretcher bars and attached with staples. 1,000 - 1,500
1767 ATTR. TO W.H. IRVINE LANDSCAPE. Early 20th c. Oil on canvas covered masonite. Signed lower right (scratched into the paint film and heightened with graphite). This shows (what is perhaps a plein air study of) a summer landscape of tall trees and a field. Perhaps the work of Wilson Henry Irvine of Old Lyme, CT (died 1936), but it remains attributed only. Size: 12" h., 17" w., framed 15" h., 20 1/2" w. Condition: needs to be cleaned, otherwise no visible defects. 600 - 900
1903 TWO ARTWORKS. One is a 19th c. colored lithograph of shells and the other is a 20th c. oil on canvasboard of boys collecting shells on a beach. The painting is signed Ruth Doran. The lithograph is "Typhis II" from Thes. 425 or 284 bis., Vol III (evidently a descriptive book of natural history or specifically shells). Various conch shells are shown. Size each framed: (shells) 15" h., 12" w. and (painting) 15 1/2" h., 20" w. Condition: no major detractions or defects to either; frames are as is. 200 - 250
1904 TWO OIL PAINTINGS. 20th c. Oil on board and oil on canvasboard. One has an expunged signature and the other has an illegible signature. Subjects are: a little girl in a field, holding a flower (painted very sketchily) and a lighthouse (also very sketchily painted). Both are perhaps outdoor studies. Size each: (girl) 9" h., 7" w., framed 14" h., 12" w. and (lighthouse) 16" h., 12" w. Condition: no major defects to either; the frame of the girl painting is as is. 125 - 175
1905 PURDY AND AYO PAINTINGS. 20th c. Oil on masonite and oil on board. The Purdy is Richard Cleaver Purdy, a listed American artist known for WPA era paintings and murals. This shows a girl and abstract flral forms in yellows and reds. The Ayo is entitled "The Bride" and shows the transformation of a young girl picking blossoms from a branch, which becomes the wreath of flowers around her head as the bride. Signed Ayo 65 in the lower left. Sizes: Purdy 20" h., 24" w. and Ayo 22" h., 18" (framed 27" x 23"). Condition: slight knicks on the edges of the unframed Purdy. 500 - 600

1968 SUSAN GURRENTZ OIL PAINTING. 20th c. Oil on canvas. Signed and notated on the stretchers "75 Acres For Sale, Westmoreland County, PGH, PA." This shows a simply rendered and decoratively painted farm with a yellow field and path. Gurrentz is an Aspen based artist now painting florals and rodeo cowboys; she was once based in Pittsburgh. This appears to be one of her early works. Size: 24" h., 30" w., framed slightly larger. Condition: slight water staining top verso of the canvas; frame as is. 350 - 450
