1142 POLYCHROMED WOODEN BUDDHIST SHRINE. Polychromed and gilt Asian sculpture, figure stands on lotus platform above fictive carved wooden rocks, resting on wooden plinthe, gilt and blue painted figure with applied jewel decoration and carved and gilt cloud pattern decorated mandala behind figure. No mark. Size: figure: 12"H, figure with base 16"H, figure with base and mandala 18 1/2"H, 6 1/2"W, 4 1/2"D. Condition: polychroming is chipping and there are minor areas of loss, mandala is loose from base,figure loose on base. 200 - 400
1145 CHINESE JEWELRY CHEST. 20th c. Wood, brass, bone. Vertical format chest with brass fittings, top brass handle, two vertical doors with inset pierced bone (ivory?) panels, open to reveal four interior silk lined drawers, above bottom drower with two brass pulls opening to reveal two level silk lined sections, side panels each decorated with two oval pierced bone (ivory?) inserts. No mark. Size: 12 1/2"H, 8"W, 5 3/4"D. Condition: finish worn on metal and wood, some metal mountings bent on edges, front metal closure missing one element. 150 - 300

1153 JAPANESE FAN IN CASE. Carved wooden shaft fan with embroidered silk flower and insect design on cream ground, pierce carved section of fan body. 1188 TWO SNUFF BOTTLES. (1) Ceramic snuff bottle is a mongoose-like animal with a filigree stone inlaid top and metal spoon. Measures: 3" l. (2) Ceramic snuff bottle has a flowers and insects motif. Measures: 2.5" h. x 2" w. Condition: both show no visible defects. 75 - 150
1189 TWO SNUFF BOTTLES. (1) Ceramic bottle has a rooster motif with a stone encrusted top and metal spoon. Measures: 3" h. (2) Ceramic bottle has a duck motif with a stone inlaid top and metal spoon. 1190 TWO SNUFF BOTTLES. (1) Ceramic bottle has a young stag on both sides with a stone inlaid top and a metal spoon. Measures: 3" h. (2) Urn shaped ceramic bottle has a floral pattern with a stone encrusted top and metal spoon. Condition: stag bottle has a few minor flaws in the ceramic finish; otherwise both have no visible defects. 75 - 150
1197 PENGUIN BOX & BOTTLE. (1) Snuff bottle with a reverse painted scene of a penguin on both sides. It has a stone encrusted top with a metal spoon. Measures: 3" h. Condition: no visible defects. (2) Bone scrimshaw box shows a penguin. Measures: 6" l. x 1.5" w. x 1" h. Condition: good, except for a minor flaw on the left front side. 100 - 200
1198 TWO CARVED NUT SNUFF BOTTLES. (1) Nut bottle has possible erotic scenes carved on both sides with a stone encrusted top and metal spoon. Measures: 2" l. (2) Nut bottle has faces in a crowd carved on both sides with a stone inlaid top and metal spoon. Measures: 2 1/4" l. Condition: no visible defects. 50 - 100
1199 TWO SNUFF BOTTLES. (1) Bottle is a gourd with an engraved owl scene on both sides. It has a stone encrusted top with a metal spoon. Measures: 2". (2) Round bottle is constructed of horn(?) with an engraved mice scene in bone on both sides. It has a stone inlaid top with a metal spoon. Measures: 3 1/4" l. Condition: no visible defects for both; but mice bottle is discolored in places. 50 - 100
1312 RECUMBENT CRANE NETSUKE. Described as tagua nut ("vegetable ivory"), with engraved details and rubbed in color. Shows a crane lying down. Size: 1 1/8" h., 2" long. Condition: no visible defects. 60 - 100
1313 INTERTWINED FISH NETSUKE. Described as tagua nut ("vegetable ivory"), this material is often used as an ivory substitute. It has a long and distinguished history as a carving material; when ripened and dried, it has the characteristics of ivory. This netsuke shows two intertwined catfish. Size: 1 1/2" h. Condition: no defects. 60 - 100
1314 RAT ON A CLAM NETSUKE. Described as tagua nut ("vegetable ivory"), a material used frequently in small carvings and button making (up to WW2) in place of ivory. Also known as Binroji nut in Japanese. Shows a rat whose tail is caught in a shut clam shell. Size: 1 1/4" h., 1 1/2" w. Condition: no visible defects. 60 - 100

1411 RATS ON A JUG NETSUKE. Bone or perhaps ivory. Shows two rats clinging to a jug. Size: 1 1/2" h. Condition: no defects. 60 - 100
1415 CHINESE SCROLL: BIRDS IN EVERGREEN. Date unknown. Ink and watercolor on paper, mounted on silk. Written characters are on the right edge. Two red birds with black crests fly or perch among evergreen branches. The dilution of the black ink to impart depth and recession into space is attractively done as is the simple complementary color scheme of red-orange and blue-green. Size: 35 1/2" h., 16 1/4" w., mounted 79" h., 22 1/2" w. Condition: yellow spot in the upper right of the image. 1,000 - 2,000
1417 CHINESE SCROLL: GROUSE AMONG BAMBOO. Date unknown. Ink and watercolor on paper, mounted on silk. Shows a brown ground fowl among bamboo. Adorned with two red collector's seals and script appearing on the left side. Size: 27" h., 15 3/4" w., mounted 78" h., 21 1/4" w. Condition: some black ink has rubbed onto the adjoining silk mounting on the right side. 1,000 - 2,000
1419 CHINESE SCROLL DRAGONFLY. 20th c? Ink and watercolor on paper, mounted on silk. One red seal and script in the upper left. Wet-in-wet brushwork is set against very precise delineation for the dragonfly's wings and antennae. Size: 25 1/2" h., 12 3/4" w., mounted 70" h., 19" w. Condition: no visible defects. 500 - 700
1420 CHINESE SCROLL: DUCKS AMONG PEONIES. 20th c? Ink and watercolor on paper, mounted to silk. Black crested ducks float among grass and two large pink peonies. Painted in the "boneless" style (no outlines). Two red collector's seals with accompanying script appear as well. Size: 37 1/2" h., 17 1/4" w., mounted 79" h., 23 5/8" w. 1453 CHINESE SCROLL FARMING VILLAGE. 20th c. Ink and watercolor on paper, mounted on silk. Two red seals and script appear on the left edge. Blank paper is used creatively to represent clouds or fog rising from a farming village. Gridded farm land recedes in perspective that is reminiscent of Western perspective systems; this scroll seems to combine Western and Oriental art techniques for an interesting result. Size: 34 1/4" h., 18 3/4" w., mounted 73" h., 24" w. Condition: some slight discoloration on the mounting silk and a frayed right edge to the silk. 600 - 800

1458 JAPANESE PRINT DRUM PLAYER. 19th c? Color print on tan paper. With two red collector's seals, and much calligraphy. The drum player is costumed opulently (the hat is represented with golden ink). An unverified pencil inscription on the backing paper reads "Tosa School."
