The attribution of date and subject come from the late Dr. Paul Chew, former director of the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, and relayed by the consignor. The exact date has not been determined or verified. The female sitter bears a resemblance to the infamous Lucrezia Borgia (died 1519), wife and consort several times over to various potentates and public figures in Renaissance Italy; accused of conspiracy to murder her second husband, purportedly incestuous with her brother, and the mother of a bastard child to the Pope Alexander (her father) she was a member of a notorious family. The attributes of this female image do not conclusively show this to be Borgia, but the manner is of the High Italian Renaissance. Size: 52" h., 37" w., framed 57 1/2" h., 43" w. Condition: craquellure among the red paint especially with paint film lifting from the canvas; two patched repairs; warped slightly concavely.
