Originally belonged to Joseph G. Butler (1860-1927). An old nameplate reads Simon de Vlieger (Dutch, 1601-1653); independant examinations indicate that it may be the work of a later deVlieger follower. DeVlieger was known for seascapes characterized by sky and sea effects-- this painting has that and also shows a man in a small masted boat upon rough waves. Pencil inscription on the verso reads "Collection of F.N. Smith, Esq, Wingfield Park, Derbyshire." Size: 10 1/16" h., 11 5/8" w., framed 18" h., 19" w. | 2801 | HONG PUNCH BOWL IN MOUNT. 1897. Chinese export Hong punch bowl in classical gilt bronze (?) footed and handled mount. Bowl decorated on the interior and exterior with scene of port area of Canton, China along the Pearl River. Various Western countries set up trading posts or "hongs" along the banks of the river. These "hongs" were used by foreign merchants as warehouses, offices and residences. The flags flying represent the countries of the merchants. The area between the hongs and the river was called the Respondentia Walk. This was the only area of the city where foreigners were permitted to travel freely. The flags on the bowl include those of the United States, France and Sweden. The bowl is underglaze decorated with raised enamel highlights on flags and clouds. There is an overall fine cracklure. The interior top rim is decorated with a band of iron red stylized flowers and gilt pendant decorated band. The exterior base is decorated with the same pattern. The exterior top rim is decorated with a thin iron red band. The bronze mount rests on four scrolled feet below an acanthus and scroll decorated base. Two pierced handles also have acanthus and scrolled decoration. The top rim of the mount has a band of oval pierced decoration and segmented gadrooned highlights. Marked: the bowl is marked on the bottom with an iron red stylized crown mark above lines which suggest a JUWC. A banderole below this mark is dated 1897. An identical mark in the form of a raised metal tag appears on the interior rim of the metal base. Size: bowl: 7"H, 14"Diam. top. Mount: 10"H around bowl, 13 1/4"H to top of handles, 16 1/2"Diam. top of bowl, 24"W from handle to handle. Condition: metal in good condition, bowl with no visible cracks or chips.
