"MOUNTED WARRIOR ON WHITE HORSE" It is interesting to note that the brocade in which this warrior is robed is the exact same brown brocade as on the Jingo doll described earlier in this appraisal report, certainly suggesting a similar dating for the two. The warrior holds a whisk (sign of rank) in his right hand and sword in left, sports a pointed hat, and has his feet fit into lacquer wood stirrups. The horse prances alertly, one leg up. In an old black-white photograph, the horse and warrior are placed on a matched stand, now apparently lost. Date: Meiji Era (c. 1860-70). Dimensions: 15" h. x c. 12" w. Condition: some wear, particularly on horse. Materials: brocade, metal, silk, paper, hair, paint, lacquer, fibers, glass eyes in horse. "GROOM: ATTENDANT FOR HORSE AND SAMURAI" A bald-headed smiling figure representing a non-elite class of society, this figure, as shown in the old photograph, should be associated with the handsome horse and groom. There originally would have been a rein or some other kind of tangible connection between horse and groom. Costume has blue brocade, with thick purple roll around waist, and simple plates of shoulder armor in same design as metal flaps of breast plate and skirts as #1232, indicating perhaps same period, same workshop or both. Date: Meiji Era (c. 1860-70 a.d.). Dimensions: 12 1/2" h. x c. 7 1/2" w. at shoulder. Condition: head painting cracked and peeling. Materials: brocade, metal, silk, straw for sandals, paint. "PAIR OF BUTTERFLY DANCERS" A charming pair, these matched butterfly dancers were featured performers at the Court in Kyoto, and are of a type known from the Heian Period (10-12th centuries) on. Always exquisite in form, and pose, their robes and accoutrements are carefully chosen to display the girls at their most delicate. Here, attached rigid butterfly wings spread behind the figures, and one holds a floral spray; as can be seen from the hand positions, both girls should be doing so, but one floral spray is missing. Hair tied gracefully with gold paper, ending in purple 'cap'. Fingers are rendered with extreme delicacy. Date: Meiji Era (late 19th-early 20th century). Dimensions: 10 1/2" h. x c. 7" w. Condition: fine. Materials: brocade, silk, paper, paint, wood. Provenance: Originally obtained from the collection of Bernard Kaufmann, New York City, 1972. "YOUNG SAMURAI" The young boy is dressed in full samurai regalia, including two swords, a fan, and a dragon helmet. The shoulder and skirt pads lack the intricacy of earlier samurai dolls. The brocade is relatively flashy, compared to the harmonious tones of the brocade gracing those earlier dolls. Nevertheless, this is a competently-executed dressed doll of impressive size. Date: 20th century. Dimensions: 13" h. x c. 6 1/2" w. Condition: fine. Materials: brocade, metal, paint, lacquer, rush foot treds, (mock?) shark skin, and wood, for stand. Provenance: Originally obtained from the collection of Bernard Kaufmann, New York City, 1972. This collection has been displayed in various museums displaying oriental exhibits. |

"PAIR OF OLD AND YOUNG ARCHERS" Archers, their age specified as young or aged by facial features and hair growth, with quivers on backs. Hands posed to hold objects. These are quite "folky" representations, and do not possess the refinement and quality of materials or finish as the archer mentioned earlier in #1199. Date: Meiji Era (late 19th-early 20th century). Dimensions: c. 9" h. Condition: wear on shoes and on paper; not of quality of many other dolls in collection, so show age badly. Materials: puffy think silk, paper, feathers, paint, lacquer, wood. Provenance: Originally obtained from the collection of Bernard Kaufmann, New York City, 1972. This collection has been displayed in various museums displaying oriental exhibits. |

"THREE MEN HOLDING SUSHI PARTY" Charming genre scene, perhaps more interesting because of interest of items accompanying dolls than for dolls themselves. Dolls wear hats, each with slightly different motif from simple to less simple, perhaps indicating rank of person portrayed. Stances indicate that there is one host and two guests. They are all having a wonderful time, as evidenced by their smiles. These are simple works, not powerful images as dolls, but captivating for their own naivete. Date: 20th century. Dimensions: standing figure, 8" h. x 4" w.; two seated figures, 5" h. x c. 5 1/2" w. Condition: cracking of paint on faces, silk slightly dirty. Materials: silk, fiber, paint, and accompanying objects of wood or papier mache. Provenance: Originally obtained from the collection of Bernard Kaufmann, New York City, 1972. This collection has been displayed in various museums displaying oriental exhibits. |

"YOUNG SAMURAI" Young boys (see blush of moustache, upper lip) in samurai regalia, doubtless representing attendants on full-fledged samurai; suggested in this role in this collection is #1239, who sports the same type of white silk sash roll around middle; these are probably meant as a 'master' and 'apprentice' set of three samurai. The happy pair is dressed in brocades of differing patterns but have matched poses. Since the photographs were taken, they have been given swords, but may still be missing several other items which pertain to their costumes. Date: Meiji Era (later 19th century). Dimensions: kneeling boy with topknot, 12" h.; kneeling boy with shaved head, 10 1/2" h. Condition: very good apart from condition of paper hats. Materials: brocade, silks, fiber, paint, wood, metal, paper, rushes, for shoe covers. Provenance: Originally obtained from the collection of Bernard Kaufmann, New York City, 1972. This collection has been displayed in various museums displaying oriental exhibits. |

"SEATED SAMURAI WITH RED SILK BUCKLE TASSELS" A handsome doll, representing a young samurai, it is accompanied by numerous accoutrements, including two swords, and gold cone hat. Left hand needs to have battle fan, now missing. Shoulder pads articulated, following traditions of fine doll-making. Possibly originally part of set with #1265 and #1239; it shares with the important seated helmeted warrior of #1239 the red silk buckle tassels, and is of approximately the same height. Date: Meiji Era (late 19th century). Dimensions: 16 1/2" h. x 9 1/2" w. Condition: paint damage to hands, and other slight areas of wear; otherwise, fine. Materials: brocade, silk, metal, fiber, paper, gilding, and wood, for rack-bench. Provenance: Originally obtained from the collection of Bernard Kaufmann, New York City, 1972. This collection has been displayed in various museums displaying oriental exhibits. |

Dimensions: dancer, 11 3/4" h. x 7 1/8" w. finger; seated man, 8" h. x 7 1/2" w.; seated chanter, 9 1/2" h. x c. 7 1/2" w. Condition: wood and paint damage. Materials: thin silk, wood lacquer. "SEATED WAR COMMANDER" The most elaborately bedecked of any of the military officers in the Kaufmann collection, this is a splendid dressed doll, ripe with dignity, and dressed according to his rank, with elaborate brocade, furs, and silk tassels. He wears a full complement of two words with hardstone necklace from which is pendant the sacred mirror, and is seated on a 'tori' - style red lacquer bench, very special seating and one created for important personnages only. The war drum, #1269, and possibly the battle wand and fan, #1270 (although this suite appears slightly later) might well have accompanied him in his original context. Date: Meiji Era or possibly Taisho Era (If so, superlative quality for that era, 1912-26 a.d.) Dimensions: 17 1/4" h. x 11" w. Condition: apart from some loss of gilding and some lacquer and paint cracking, and slightly loss of hardstones in necklace, very fine. Materials: brocade, fur, silk, fiber, wood, lacquer, paint, gilding, metal, and hardstones. Provenance: Originally obtained from the collection of Bernard Kaufmann, New York City, 1972. This collection has been displayed in various museums displaying oriental exhibits. See Lot #1269 & Lot #1270. |

"STANDING MARUHEI SAMURAI DOLL" A fine example of fully-armored samurai dressed doll, this doll has much in common with #1266, #1265, and #1239, and possibly dates to the same period and workshops; note similarities in face painting between this doll and the seated samurai of #1266. The sword, which works, is of excellent quality for a doll sword. This doll is one of three originally in collection, and is by the workshop known as "Maruhei", a well-known workshop of the late Meiji and Taisho Eras whose dolls are considered highly desirable among collectors today. Date: late Meiji-Taisho Eras (early 20th century). Dimensions: 15 1/4" h. x 7" w. Condition: only minor paint and lacquer problems, otherwise excellent. Materials: brocade, wood, including stand, metal silk, fiber, paper, and rushes, for foot treds. Provenance: Originally obtained from the collection of Bernard Kaufmann, New York City, 1972. "NITTA YOSHISADA OFFERING SWORD TO WAVES" An unusual doll for this collection, the figure is placed in a specific painted representational setting. The figure has a sensitive and aristocratic face, and hoists his sword preparatory to offering it to the blue waves, which lap at the rock upon which he stands. His gloves are executed in striking gray-white polka dots, and the brocade is a lovely purple. The hero, Nitta Yoshisada (1301-38 a.d.) was involved in the civil war of the Genko Era of the early 1330's. He and Ashikaga Takauji led the revolt against the Kamakura shogunate, and he himself attacked the Hojo clan forces in Kamakura in 1833, defeating them soundly; and during the following Kemmu Restoration, he was made commander of the Kyoto 'musha-dokoro', guards who kept order among warriors assigned to guard the emperor and his palaces. In turn, he was defeated by an Ashikaga clan officer in violation of the new regulations established by the Kemmu Restoration. Date: Meiji Era (c. 1890 a.d.). Dimensions: 13" h. x 6" w. at hem. Condition: some paint loss, otherwise fine. Materials: brocade, metal, fiber, mesh, paint, wood. Provenance: Originally obtained from the collection of Bernard Kaufmann, New York City, 1972.
