19TH C MUNICH MAGI WINDOW Late 19th Century. c.1880-1910. Munich style stained glass figural window representing Three Magi, Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar presenting gifts. Traditional stained glass compositin of stacking figures within tall arched format typifies Munich style developed in the 19th c. of looking at 15th and 16th c. examples for inspiration. Form and detail are painted or stained onto a glass panel, lead outlines play a lesser role in defining the form. Architectural detail of column, corinthian capital and arched top are created by this painted and fired technique. Facial details and fabric details are also refined in this fashion. This window was once part of a larger scene. Missing right hand panel would contain the fiugres of the Holy Family in the stable and be edged on the right with matching architectural detail. No makers mark visible. Size: glass: 72"H, 31"W. Frame: 77"H, 35 1/2"W. Condition: window is in a wooden framework with four reinforcing cross bars for support. An area of repair above the standing Magi has solid green replacement panels, several panels around this repaired area are also cracked. Provenance: this window was removed from a church in Ohio. |

ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA WINDOW. C.1890-1910. Stained glass window arched format in rectangular framework, carmel slag glass central field, double green ripple glass banded border framing blue panels, center field framed by two acanthus capital columns and acanthus scroll arched top. Central shaped medallion bordered with beaded band and four lily finials. Center figure of St. Anthony of Padua (born 1195-died 1231) holding the Christ Child resting on an open book in one arm and a spray of lilies in the other. He wears a Franciscan habit with a rosary suspended from his cinture. the book symbolizes that he is a Doctor of the Church, the lily symbolizes purity and chastity. Rosette panels appear throughout the window. No makers mark. Size: glass: 72"H, 37 1/4"W, wooden framework: 77"H, 42 1/4"W. Condition: window set in a newer wooden framework. one carmel slag glass panel crakced, one panel of the Christ Child with two cracks, paint drips on window. Provenance: removed from church in Ohio.
