REVERSIBLE POLISH RELIGIOUS BANNER Reversible Polish religious and fraternal hanging banner on a wood dowel with painted gilt finials. (side A) The words, "Krolowo Korony Polskiej Patronko Z. Polek Modl sie za Nami." are embroidered in a deep yellow thread with a faint maroon border on a sky blue silk taffetta background. An appliqued cameo of the Virgin mother holding the baby Jesus, draws attention to the center of the banner. The cameo was produced in exquisite detail; the skin of the mother and child (face, hands, foot) are dyed silk with embroidery highlights expressing shadow and light, eyebrows and eyes. The mother wears a green cloak with a red dress beneath, the child wears a simple red shift, all machine embroidered. Golden halos with angels encircle the crowns, bejeweled with real beads and faceted crystals, on their brows. An embroidered, stylized floral vine weaves through out the banner. The banner is bordered with deep yellow trim and large tassles, the ornately scalloped bottom edge, drips with corded fringe. (Side B) The words, "Komisja ZW. Polek W AM. No.2 GI - Zalozona 30 GO LIPCA, 1919 R. - Pittsburgh, PA" are embroidered in a sky blue on a deep yellow taffetta background. A cream taffetta shield applique draws the eye to the banner's center. Two women, 1 in blue, 1 in red, are shaking hands over a combined polish and american flag coat of arms shield. A rising sun and the city skyline is visible in the background, rose and floral branches cross near the bottom of the applique. Mixed floral bouquets are embroidered along the banners borders, and edged with blue trim. Size: 35 1/2"W, 58"L. Condition: Age appropriate wear, stitches along seams are coming apart, top part of banner (along the wooden dowel rod) have been repaired and replaced. There are some small tears in the yellow taffetta fabric, upon closer inspection. |

Highly carved mahogany frame, acanthus and pineapple crest rail over flame veneered panel, carved and scrolled back and arms, carved eagle and lion's paw feet. Upholstered in a green mohair fabric with two bolsters. Provenance: Purchased from the Tallman family in the late 19th century, then by the current fourth owner. The Tallmans moved to Janesville, WI from New York after making a large fortune in land specualtion. They built an extravagant house in Janesville in 1855-1857. 2 VICTOR KING THOMPSON PRINTS. The drypoint in black ink of "Cottages-Guernsey" is dated Nov., 7, 1938. The etching/drypoint of an untitled harbor with 19th c. buildings is dated Feb. 13, 1939. The watercolor on card stock of a farmstead and silo is dated Feb. 13, 1939. Thompson (Ohio, 1913-?) is a listed artist with an obvious affinity for architectural scenery. Sizes: 4 1/2" x 6 5/8" and 10 3/4" x 6 7/8" and 3 3/8" x 6" respectively. Conditions: the prints' laid paper is fragile and there is a tear on the largest print--top edge 1/2" long. |

BAROQUE MOTHER AND CHILD OIL. Date unknown, but appears to be of the 17th c. No visible signature or mark. Painted in an Italian Baroque style. Set in a large shell and acanthus leaf decorated gilded frame. There is an old pen written phrase on the stretcher bars "Bartolomeo da Modena." Size: 10 1/2" h., 8" w., framed 19" h., 17" w. Condition: brittle with craquellure; putty is at the bottom of the canvas where the painting has pulled away from the stretcher bars; frame as is. |

Thompson (Ohio, 1913-?) is listed as a sculptor and evidently he also was an architect (B.Arch. 1941 Ohio State University) and created an endowment in his name at his alma mater for indigent architecture students. Sizes: 7 3/4" h., 4 3/4" w., and 3 3/8" h., 5 1/2" w. Condition: unmatted and unframed; Frankfort Cathedral is torn in the right margin. |
