Edouard S. Ziegler and
his wife Simone Jaguin Ziegler were world travelers and dual French-U.S.
citizens who made their final home in Wheeling, West Virginia. Edouard
was the grandson of Samuel who together with his brother Aaron Bloch, founded
Bloch Brothers Tobacco Company in Wheeling in 1879. The Bloch brothers
developed Mail Pouch Tobacco, a popular chewing tobacco sold in a paper sack
resembling a mail pouch. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth
centuries, thousands of rural barns painted with a Mail Pouch Tobacco
advertisement (“Chew Mail Pouch Tobacco Treat yourself to the best”) once
dotted the Ohio Valley landscape, and the Mail Pouch barn became an iconic
representation of folk art advertising. Edouard Ziegler died in 1995, and
